Cabinet/Armoire Update

I finally found knobs for the makeover cabinet!  After spending hours at the architectural salvage place I love,  I came out with some great antique knobs and escutcheons with chippy paint, lots of age and charm.

So do you want to see what's behind the doors?

So...what do you think?  No, I haven't gone bonkers and put a real fireplace in a wood cabinet.  It's actually a great little heater that looks surprisingly authentic when on.   It's cozy and warm and Magoo didn't have to do any work but help me lift it and place it in the cabinet. ( That's generally a prerequisite for any project I take on.)   He's all about what?  That can't be done, that isn't going to work, etc.  He runs like George Costanza when he sees me getting out the furniture sliders.    ;  )

The escutcheons were old brass and the paint was old enough to be concerned about lead.  A simple fix of coating with clear nail polish made them safe and really brought out the rusty, chippy textures.

I removed the paint from the glass.  They're so pretty that I wanted them clear and sparkly.

I bought some long bar type handles while we were in Virginia, but I seem to have, um... misplaced them.  Ok, fine..my house is a disaster area and who knows where they are.  I'll find them eventually and then I can open the drawer where I stashed my chocolates.

Aren't these fantastic?  I'll post about my big adventure later in the week.

I'm thinking I'll paint the fireplace to match the cabinet at some point...our bed is mahogany so it doesn't bother me enough to do it right now.  I love my house, but I really wanted fireplaces in the kitchen and master bedroom.  If we build after we sell this house, that's on my list.  I don't like turning on the central heat.

I'm really loving the finished product and all I need now is a cold room.

The knobs are on straight...there's a little optical illusion going on here.

The paint is ASCP in Old White, Country Grey and Duck Egg Blue w/ a mix of clear and dark AS wax.  I love how it turned out.

Ahhh....a cold night by the fire for me?  Only in my dreams (and with a little help from Picnik).

Where are you Fall?

  1. i'm assuming the heater is well-insulated so as to protect the cabinet from too much warmth. that's an interesting piece, for sure!

  2. It is very well insulated and the cabinet is vented in the back, as well. The heat is only felt from the front, with absolutely no heat underneath, in back or on the sides. It can also work without any heat, just for fun, as my nieces like to use it. : )

I did finally get one in the master, hubby did the mantle and all, and I love it!! Found you at open house party, and I am going to follow.

  7. How very creative and great job on the cabinet. I had to laugh at the George Costanza comment. My husband does the same thing every time I say "hon, I was just thinking"! I appreciate you linking to the Open House party this week.

  15. Now that was a surprise, and it may be a heater but gives the look of a roaring fire. We are having a very cold and wet weekend here in southern Ontario, Canada and your lovely pictures helped 'warm' me up a bit ;) I would love to try some Annie Sloan one day. The knobs are adorable and the chippy bits very authentic looking. BTW, I stopped by from The DIY Club's 31 Days of Painting party.
